The shape of wars to come

The order to scramble went out at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire and pilots leapt into action. Two Eurofighter Typhoon jets roared into the air, thundering out to intercept a threat over the north Atlantic. As a Ministry of Defence statement baldly put it at the time: “RAF Typhoons launched to shadow a Russian Bear-H aircraft.” It was just one of 18 incidents since 2007 when the RAF has scrambled planes to confront long-range Russian bombers that have approached British airspace “without informing the proper authorities”.
