Coldstream Guards face the axe

The Goldstream Guards could face axe under sweeping defence cuts, the Sunday Express can reveal.  See on-line:

Statement by the UK National Defence Association:

"That anyone in Whitehall should even be contemplating the disbandment of the Coldstream Guards beggars belief. It is barking mad.

"This could of course be ministerial kite-flying - testing what they can get away with, and how far public opinion will allow them to go. Or it could be another example of deliberate disinformation from within the MOD - so that once the next round of defence cuts are announced we are all supposed to breathe a collective sigh of relief that they are not as serious as we had anticipated. Either way it is cynical in the extreme and shows a complete lack of respect for British military tradition which is the essential underpinning of the efficiency and effectiveness of our Armed Forces.

"Many of our finest regiments have already been lost to us in recent decades, but the axing of the Coldstream Guards would be a step too far."

Andy Smith, Director, UK National Defence Association
