Iraq and Afghanistan: Operational costs double in one year |
 The cost of Britain's military deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan has risen to more than £3 billion a year, despite Gordon Brown's promises to wind down operations in Iraq. The increases were disclosed by the House of Commons Defence Committee, which found spending on operations in the two countries this year will be nearly twice what it was last year. The rising cost of the two deployments reflects the increasing size of the Afghan mission, and the costs of protecting the remaining British troops in Iraq from insurgent attack.
